Formal vs Informal (Sen / Siz)
Like many languages, Uzbek distinguishes between formal and informal address. This is important in Uzbek culture.
When to Use Sen vs Siz
Sen (you, informal) is used with close friends, children, and peers. Siz (you, formal) is used with strangers, elders, teachers, and in professional settings. When in doubt, always use Siz — it shows respect.
Sen qayerga borasan?
Where are you going? (to a friend)
Siz qayerga borasiz?
Where are you going? (formal/respectful)
Sening isming nima?
What's your name? (informal)
Sizning ismingiz nima?
What is your name? (formal)
Verb Ending Differences
The verb endings change depending on whether you use Sen or Siz:
